Documentary Film for 2012

I recently learned of a documentary film being produced for possible release into theaters in 2012; with encounters with strange creatures in the United States being the theme, reports of living pterosaurs are included. I was grateful to be invited to be a part of the production preparations. From my preliminary research into the previous documentaries created by this producer, I believe that this new production will give a fair and open perspective with respect being shown for the eyewitnesses.

Are Most Pterosaurs Nocturnal?

Perhaps the most significant evidence for the general rule that modern pterosaurs are nocturnal is the connection with bioluminescence. Many of the repeated-sighting areas are where flying lights are observed, for example, in Papua New Guinea. But strange flying lights at night are also seen in North America, including Texas.

“Could Marfa Lights be nocturnal flying scavengers? I don’t mean to put down the bat hunting hypothesis, regarding the splittings and rejoinings that may have given rise to the comment from residents about “dancing devils.” That may have a place, during seasons when bats are about around Marfa, Texas . . . But bats are unlikely to be about during the colder winter nights, and some of the stranger Marfa Lights are seen on some of those nights.”

Pterosaurs may eat bats

“One of the flashes took off from a big tree overhanging the river and made a kind of flashing coma turn. Many flashes were parallel to the river. . . . there were many fish . . . Prime hunting grounds for fish-eating birds. Only these things fish at night with bioluminescence.”

“No evidence proves universal extinctions, but ample eyewitness evidence supports the concept that some supposedly ‘ancient’ creatures still live, including pterosaurs.”

Ohio Pterosaur Sightings

I recently received an email from an eyewitness:

” . . .On June 26, 2010 at 11:15 PM I was driving on Rt 309 just outside of Kenton Ohio, perfectly clear night and very bright outside due to the full moon and I had a creature swoop down and glide over my hood of my car. It glided smoothly and looked like a Pterodactyl and I thought to myself “what the H _ ll was that!” and watched it as it smoothly flew into a thick area of trees . . . it looked like it had a tail and was also looking like it was jet black, I could see almost the bones in its wings but I did NOT see feathers at all.”

A minister gave this account of his sighting in Ohio:

“It was around 9am on a Sunday morning in Oct. of 2005. I was in Mount Vernon, Ohio. I was coming to preach at a church out in the country . . . I happen to notice a creature in the sky. . . . I took a moment to slow the car down and take a look at it. To my estimation it appeared to have no feathers . . . a leathery grayish color. . . . It’s wings did not look like bird wings, but also appeared leathery and bat-like . . . The tail: longer than most bird tails I am used to, no feathers, and with a diamond-shaped point at the end.”

Some time ago I received an email from an eyewitness of a daylight long-tailed pterosaur.

‘We have them here in U.S. Hi my name is Jan. I am from Antwerp, OH in Northwest Ohio. I have seen the same thing. It was huge. And it matches your description. About 4.5 ft tall, 10ft from head to end of tail. long skinny tail with a spade about 3-4in from end of tail. It had a wing span of I would say 8-10ft. Dark green skin sort of like an alligator. It had round long pointed teeth . . .”

Giant Bat . . . in the United States?

A common explanation for reports of giant living pterosaurs in the Southwest Pacific–that is the fruit bat called “Flying Fox.” But many problems plague that explanation. Descriptions include a very long tail, brilliant bioluminescence, fish-catching habits, and a truly giant size (sometimes over twenty feet in wingspan). The fruit bat hypothesis falls on its face.

But another problem with the fruit bat explanation stares us in the face. Two similar descriptions are found in many eyewitness accounts of “pterodactyls” in the United States: a very long tail and a truly giant size. Many accounts include a wingspan estimate of over seven feet, which is too big to be a Flying Fox that escaped from a zoo.

Revolutionary as it may at first appear, why not consider the obvious? Rhamphorhynchoid pterosaurs still live.

Updated early in 2018:

Excerpts from the book’s title page:

Eyewitness Reports of Pterosaurs in the Contiguous United States

Reports of huge flying “pterodactyls” in American skies have floated around the internet for years; but before about 2005, details were scarce. When an eyewitness was named, the interviewer was often anonymous; even when an eyewitness was credible, and the account published in a newspaper, the story was ridiculed, discouraging others who had also seen strange flying creatures. . . .

How are sightings in the United States related to those in the southwest Pacific? How do some apparent nocturnal pterosaurs pertain to bats, and how are bats irrelevant? How could modern living pterosaurs have escaped scientific notice? These mysteries have slept in the dark, beyond the knowledge of almost all Americans, even beyond our wildest dreams (although the reality of some pterosaurs is a living nightmare to some bats). These mysteries have slept . . . until now.

From the third chapter of the book:

The longer we watched, the more spooked we became. It was as though a giant vampire bat (like Dracula-style) was there, but neither of us thought it really looked like a bat, either, even a big one. Also, all the bigger bats are fruit-eaters and not scary at all. This was frightening. I get little chills just writing about it now.

Excerpts from the book’s Appendix:

Philosophy at the foundation

Charles Darwin chose an extreme dedication to Naturalism philosophy; his Common-Ancestry ideas seem to make God unnecessary. He chose atheism, but most Americans reject the idea that life arose without any creative act of God.
